Born in raise in Ontario, my first (remembered) sighting of a magnolia tree was at the age of 28. It was the pink variety that blooms early spring before any of its leaves have budded. I said to my husband “Look at that! Someone has glued fake flowers to their tree!”, I thought of the queen of hearts, her minions frantically painting roses red.
I still struggle to believe they’re real.
